These are my cousins, Drake (right) and Ben (left). Drake is four years old and Ben is two. I know on the outside, they both look like completely normal children, but they both have a disease called Hydrocephalus or “water on the brain”. This causes there to be an abnormal amount of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain. I know that may not sound that serious, but it causes extreme pressure, convulsion, and enlargement of the head. It can also cause death. The pressure can become so great that it can literally push their brains out the bottom of their skulls. They are both children, but they have both been through more surgeries than most people will be in their entire life, all on their brain. They will forever have massive scars on the back of their heads and both will have a 6 foot tube running from their skull to their stomach for the rest of their lives. Do you think you could live like that? Because guess what - they do. Even with this rare disease, they are still two perfectly normal children; they play, they wrestle with each other, they make their parent’s life unpleasant. They are completely normal.
But the fact of the matter is that not many people know about Hydrocephalus. I sure as hell didn’t before it appeared in my family. I am posting this to raise awareness, because it could very well happen to someone you know or someone in your family or your children when you have them. Please, reblog this to raise awareness because you may not care, but I sure as hell do.
